10 Taekwondo Terms to Know

If you’re new to taekwondo, you may hear a lot of Korean terms that are used during class. These terms form the foundation of the language used in taekwondo training and help students better understand the art. Learning these essential terms will not only help you follow along in class but also deepen your understanding and appreciation of taekwondo’s traditions and culture. Here are 10 important taekwondo terms you should know:

Dojang (도장) – Training Hall

The dojang refers to the training hall where taekwondo classes take place. It’s the space where students come to practice, train, and improve their skills. Showing respect for the dojang is an important part of taekwondo etiquette. Students often bow when entering and leaving the dojang as a sign of respect for the space and their training.

Dobok (도복) – Uniform

The dobok is the traditional uniform worn during taekwondo practice. It typically consists of a white jacket and pants, along with a belt that signifies the student’s rank. Wearing the dobok reflects commitment to the art and the values of taekwondo.

Kihap (기합) – Shout

A kihap is the loud, sharp shout that students make during movements such as kicks, punches, or strikes. This shout serves multiple purposes: it helps release energy, increase power, and intimidate opponents. It’s also a mental cue to focus and put maximum effort into the technique being performed.

Charyeot (차렷) – Attention

Charyeot is the command given by the instructor to bring students to attention. When this command is called, students stand up straight, with their feet together and hands at their sides, showing they are ready to focus and listen. This position signifies respect and mental readiness.

Kyong Ye (경례) – Bow

Kyong Ye means “bow” and is a sign of respect in taekwondo. Students bow to their instructors, fellow students, and the dojang to demonstrate respect and humility. Bowing is a core part of taekwondo etiquette and a way to honor the tradition and people involved in the practice.

Joonbi (준비) – Ready

The term joonbi signals that students should get into the ready stance. In this position, students stand with their feet shoulder-width apart, hands in front of their body, and fists lightly closed. It signifies that the student is prepared both mentally and physically for what comes next.

Gyeorugi (겨루기) – Sparring

Gyeorugi is the Korean word for sparring, one of the most exciting and dynamic aspects of taekwondo. It’s a form of practice where students engage in controlled combat with each other, applying techniques learned in class. Sparring helps improve timing, reflexes, and self-defense skills.

Poomsae (품새) – Forms

Poomsae are pre-arranged patterns of movements that students practice to demonstrate their understanding of techniques. Each poomsae has a specific sequence of kicks, punches, blocks, and stances that represent an imaginary fight. Practicing poomsae helps students build precision, control, and fluidity in their movements.

Taekwondo Jang (태권도 장) – taekwondo School/Academy

The term taekwondo jang refers to the taekwondo school or academy where students train. It’s similar to dojang but can be used more broadly to refer to the actual school or institution where taekwondo is taught. Students often refer to their school as their “home” for training.

Sabum (사범) – Instructor

A sabum is a taekwondo instructor who teaches and guides students. Sabums are highly skilled practitioners who have earned a black belt and have years of experience. They are responsible for helping students learn techniques, develop discipline, and understand the philosophy of taekwondo. Respecting the sabum is an essential part of the student-instructor relationship.

Understanding these key taekwondo terms is an important first step toward embracing the full experience of training. Not only will these words help you follow along in class at Bishop’s Elite Martial Arts Academy, but they will also give you insight into the deeper values and culture that underpin the martial art.
